In Conversation: Alternative Art Spaces with Brooke Kellaway and Libby Werbel (PMOMA)

Join co-curators Brooke Kellaway and Libby Werbel, founder of the Portland Museum of Modern Art (PMOMA) to discuss the significance and unique concepts and manifestations of alternative art spaces and the notion of museums for contemporary art. This fourth installment of the Bloom Projects Exchange Series is generously hosted by the Santa Barbara Center of Arts and Technology (SBCAST), one of Santa Barbara’s premier alternative art spaces.

The Bloom Projects Exchange Series presents solo exhibitions paired with programmatic collaborations with small-to mid-sized “off-centered” art organizations in cities across the globe. While bringing increased visibility to vibrant yet less broadly known artistic contexts, the exhibitions generate dialogue on innovative and localized approaches to display, communication, publishing, and audience development. A focal part of the series is public programming that involves critical discussion amongst Santa Barbara artists and arts professionals on the necessity of new or expanded arts initiatives and considering various factors that influence how these initiatives emerge and endure, notably in regions outside of major artistic centers, as in Santa Barbara.

PMOMA is an exhibition space in North Portland set within the stairwell and basement of Mississippi Records. With a commitment to bringing diverse and interesting programming to Portland and join the effort to enrich Portland’s art community, Portland Museum of Modern Art’s main emphasis is on national & international contemporary art.
