In response to the recently completed Earth Day Mural on the external wall of MCASB join us for an in-depth dive into Santa Barbara murals created by Mexican Modernists and a conversation about the historical importance of murals and public art within the Santa Barbara community. Moderated by Sarah Dildine, MCASB Exhibitions Manager, historical context will be provided by Julia Campos, MCASB Museum and Visitor Services Coordinator, and an analysis of murals by Alfredo Ramos Martínez and David Alfaro Siqueiros by Rachel Heidenry, local art historian and art critic.

About the Speakers
Julia Campos was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. Julia is attending SBCC where she studies Art History and Studio Art. Currently, Julia is working as the Museum & Visitor Services Coordinator at MCASB. She began her relationship with the museum in 2018 as a fellow in the Emerging Leaders in the Arts program. While in ELA, Julia curated a solo exhibition with Oakland-based artist, Natalia Anciso, titled El Corazón. El Corazón aimed to bring light to the struggles Latinos face in America as well as highlight the beauty of Latino culture.
Sarah Dildine, MCASB Exhibitions Manager and Director of Emerging Leaders in the Arts (ELA) is a Latina artist and musician dedicated to empowering others through art. Ms. Dildine graduated in 2015 with a B.A. in Art and B.S. in Psychology from University of California, Santa Barbara and has been with MCASB for six years. Ms. Dildine works daily with interns, museum staff, board members, artists, and vendors to ensure smooth running of the museum procedures and coordinate exhibitions that are available to a diverse community.
Rachel Heidenry is an art writer, educator, and curator specializing in modern and contemporary art of the United States and Latin America. Her writing has appeared in publications including Public Art Dialogue, Art21 Magazine, The Architect’s Newspaper, Hyperallergic, and East of Borneo. She is currently the Manager of Docent & Academic Programs at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA), where she curated the 2019 exhibition Alfredo Ramos Martínez: On Paper. Previously she was the Manager of Public Programs at the American Folk Art Museum in New York and a 2011 Fulbright Research Scholar in El Salvador where she created the first archive for the study of Salvadoran mural painting. She holds an M.A. in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, and a B.A. in Art History from Bard College.
