Curator’s Roundtable – Considering Contemporary Art in Santa Barbara

M. Helsenrott Hochhauser, Installation detail of Shapes in Space, 2013, Courtesy the Artist

Part of the MCASB smART Salon series, the third annual Curators Roundtable examines Santa Barbara as a platform for contemporary art and artists. Join us for an engaging conversation asking such questions as: Do curators have a responsibility to respond to the history and culture of the community in which they work? How does this compare with the bigger picture of what is being exhibited internationally? How does curating for a university gallery compare to curating for a commercial gallery or a non-profit art museum?

Guest Panelists include: Sarah Cunningham, Director of the Atkinson Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA; Elyse Gonzales, Curator of Exhibitions at the Art, Design, and Architecture Museum at the University of California Santa Barbara, CA; Brooke Kellaway, Assistant Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara; and Nathan Vonk, Curator of Sculpture at Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery, CA.

ADMISSION IS FREE

smART Salons is committed to education and lifelong learning, encouraging interdisciplinary thinking, creativity, and knowledge integration. With one panel per exhibition, smART Salons uses the art on view as a platform to catalyze thinking about larger themes pertinent to our time, thus building important connections between the visual arts and other fields of study.
