Bloom Projects: Annie Lapin, History =ing

Annie Lapin’s artworks mine from a wide swath of art historical references and search for an intersection where image and memory become another material that the viewer experiences as non-verbally as paint and canvas. However, in History =ing, the very medium represents memory: the pigment on the canvas comes from the bottom of the artists own brush bucket, which she has not emptied for the last three years. The grey color indexes the action of these three years of painting, mixing together every color she used. Lapin removed all other references to history, allowing the color remnants of her more elaborate historical paintings to run together. History becomes abstracted through this process, and is represented through physical material, rather than image. The thick paint at the sides of these canvases frames the work, evoking notions of the decorative, but also another level of materiality.

Born in Washington, DC, Annie Lapin currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received a MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA from Yale University, New Haven, CT. Lapin has recently shown at the Pasadena Museum of California Art; Grand Arts, Kansas City, MO; and Angles Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. She is represented by Honor Fraser Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.
